Pretty much Columbus is an interesting guy. Most of the myths are not that far removed from the facts. For instance, there was a myth about queen Isabella selling the crown jewels to pay for his voyage. While she didn't sell the jewels, she had thought about it. Also, its said criminals made up his crew, however, only four men were criminals. Its also said on the first voyage Columbus brought priests with him, which isn't so, it was the second voyage that five priests came with. Finally, People believe Columbus "walked"/set foot on North American soil, which he didn't unless you include the US territories, the US Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. All and all, it seems that most myths about Columbus are started by confusion on what events took place on certain voyages. However, the nationality and whereabouts of his remains are still considered myths because no one knows the correct answers of either. As for the extra information, Columbus comes across as a manipulative person when it comes to dealing with the "Indians". But, like I said he was an interesting person and unlike the myth, he was able to die rich.

Alright, so Columbus. Basically every teacher has lied to beth about the entire Columbus experience. Columbus is not the bomb. He seems like a gentleman because he didn't really get sifffolus, which is always a good thing. But he didn't even land on the real America!!! Bummer.... Columbus is just a big letdown compared to what other teachers told me. The myths are all myths because people spread them other than Columbus. Columbus "apparently" didn't make up the myths about himself, everyone else made up the lies to make him seem hella mass cooler. But he's not. He's just a normal dude who sailed across the ocean. Happens all the time. Columbus isn't a bad person/sailer, its just that people hyped up Columbus to be something he's not. He can't help that. I'd take it as a compliment if I were him, because apparently he wasn't cool enough to do all of those things people lied about.
Therefore, Columbus isn't as cool as I thought, and teachers are mean.

i believe... christopher columbus... was the man........ although there are mis conceptions he founded the America's and which started the new expansion of thier time. although there are allot of facts about him i didnt know, i still believe that no matter HE WAS THE MAN. he made it across the sea with a tennis court size ship and only had 90 men. however there are allot of myths, i still dont believe these take away credit or main points from mr. columbus due to the sole fact that it was him who decided to record the first voyage over seas and start the trade routes as well. all in all... HE WAS DA MAN BRUH!

wow I actually thought that half that stuff was true. Now I am very upset that he never actually saw North America. Because of him there was tobacco introduced and i hate tobacco so i don't like that. I thought that he did set out to prove that the earth was a sphere but he didn't. I don't like him very much anymore

I was not aware that so much of the information that i thought I knew about Christopher Columbus was untrue. If he was Italian, why/how did he end up in Spain? I also did not know that Columbus was such a religious man. The fact that he did not die a poor man didn't surprise me much, because it wouldn't have made sense for the king and queen not to reward him for his achievements. I was surprised to find out that Columbus never actually set foot on North American soil, but only on the Caribbean islands near North America. My belief is that his body is most likely buried in Spain where he died. I am not exactly sure how I feel about him as a person, but I do respect him for his bravery and opportunistic attitude.

I really liked all your posts. Make sure you do not quickly jump to conclusions about Columbus. You must ask yourself, was he out to wreak as much havoc as he did? Did he risk alot of money, and ultimately his life for Spain, or for his own glory? Many of you were saying you were surprised by his actual actions. Did you feel "let down" by years of educators telling you one thing, being blissfully led down a path of ignorance? How has your opinions of Columbus changed as a result of this reading? Were other explorers possibly different, or the same?

Wow I was told by basically every teacher I've ever had that even mentioned Columbus that he died peniless in a Spanish Prison. Just goes to show what middle school teachers know... And I distinctly remember Mr. Flickinger talking about how one of the possible causes of Columbus's death was Syphillus and this article says that is 100% not true in any way whatsoever. I also remember Mr. Flickinger telling us about the fact that everyone knew the earth was round :-) But overall those were mostly pretty cool mythbusters about Columbus that are there... although the "interesting" facts were about as interesting as Black Sabath without Tony Iommi

Well looks like everything we learned about him in the past was way off like how many guys went with him and he had preists along. Which turns out only 90 guys went and none of them were preists.

Don't forget Kyle, they DON'T know what he died of. I did say he was rumored to have died of it, but that's it. Vomitrocious??? I definitely learn a new word every day! ;D So how exactly do you all feel knowing that everything you were told about Columbus may not be true? Or could it all be true? I'm sounding like I should be a writer for Mythbusters! Continue the discussion folks! Grand Master Flickinger

What are "nare-do-goods" really who says that. it is Ironic that the Santa marie not only didn't have a priest but it sunk on Christmas day. He died of Gout.. lol Old man. Who would think there were several hundred men. Three ship couldn't hold that many without being packed like sardines. Some of these myths are just stupid. and the valid ones don't have answers.

so.. kinda mad that columbus did not discover america like we were taught in elementary school. if he didn't discover america who did? i also thought the ships he had were bigger than they mentioned they were but i did know that not many men were on the trip with him. i also thought that most of his men died while on the ship and was suprised to find that none of the men died on the ship. i was also mad to find out he was not the first to know or to think the earth was round and that everyone knew it was. if his thought that the earth was round was not original and everyone else knew it was then why did the queen pay for him to go on the trip?
